A second straight day of massive protests sponsored by Venezuela's main political opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) took place in Caracas and elsewhere across the country on April 20, El Nacional reported. Demonstrations in several areas of Caracas, including El Rosal, El Paraiso, O'Higgins Avenue and Las Mercedes, were broken up by the Bolivarian National Police and the national guard. According to a Stratfor source, the Venezuelan government's main concern is being forced to deploy the armed forces to deal with the growing unrest. The government apparently does not have a complete picture of how many mid-ranking officers may be dissatisfied with the direction the country is taking. That remains a source of concern for the administration of President Nicolas Maduro.
