U.S.: Obama Addresses NATO Summit In Wales

U.S. President Barack Obama closed the two-day NATO summit in Newport, Wales on Sept. 5 with a televised address considering the future of the alliance and responses to the crises in Ukraine, Iraq and Syria. Earlier in the summit, NATO leaders approved plans to create a rapid response force headquartered in Eastern Europe that could quickly mobilize in the case of Russian aggression against a NATO member state, AP reported. Moscow responded by saying that the alliance is using the Ukraine crisis as an excuse to expand closer to Russian borders and that the move would undoubtedly aggravate tensions, but Obama stipulated that an increased NATO presence in Eastern Europe serves as the best deterrent against antagonistic nations. The closing of the summit coincided with the announcement of a cease-fire between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, which Obama said he was optimistic about but that the cease-fire needed to be tested first.
