U.K.: Parliament Overwhelmingly Approves Early Election

British lawmakers overwhelmingly approved on April 19 Prime Minister Theresa May's call to hold a snap election in early June, The Guardian reported. May announced the decision April 18, in a move aimed at shoring up national support ahead of Brexit negotiations. In calling for a June 8 election, the prime minister is seizing on the fact that support for the opposition Labour Party has plummeted, with the party sitting in the low to mid-20 percent range in most opinion polls. Still, the election could bring new headaches for May's government, including a push by the Scottish National Party for a new independence referendum in Scotland.
