Turkey: Polls Close, Vote Counting On Constitutional Reform Under Way

Polls in Turkey for a referendum on constitutional reform that will determine whether President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be granted sweeping new powers have closed and vote counting has commenced, Hurriyet Daily News reported April 16. Results are expected to be announced later in the evening on April 16. A "Yes" vote would give Erdogan vastly enhanced powers to appoint Cabinet ministers, issue decrees, choose judges and dissolve parliament. The new system would scrap the role of prime minister and concentrate power in the hands of the president, placing all state bureaucracy under his control. Whether the referendum passes or fails, the ruling Justice and Development Party will keep pursuing its domestic and foreign policy goals to address Turkey's security concerns.
