Tunisia: Ruling Party Calls For Supporters To Rally

Tunisia's ruling Ennahda party called for demonstrators to gather in central Tunis at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 to show support for the constitutional assembly, AP reported. Leftist parties had withdrawn their participation in the constitutional assembly after secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid was killed Feb. 6. Ennahda's rally is also meant to protest "French interference" after French Interior Minister Manuel Valls on Feb. 7 denounced Belaid's killing as a betrayal of the "values of the Jasmine Revolution." Police in riot gear as well as plainclothes officers are patrolling the main thoroughfare in central Tunis.
