Thailand: Bomb Kills 2, More Devices Defused

A bomb exploded in the city of Pattani in southern Thailand on Feb. 17, killing two and injuring 11, and police defused several additional devices in nine other areas around the city, Reuters reported. According to the police, the attackers were male Muslim separatists who tried to place the bombs while disguised as Muslim women. Southern Muslims' distrust of Bangkok, which largely stems from ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's heavy-handed crackdown on Muslim insurgencies in the early 2000s, has contributed to the ongoing insurgency and deteriorating security situation in the region.
