Syria: U.N. Peacekeeping Mission Would Be Nonviable, Russian Official Says

Attempts to push decisions involving the use of force, including those involving peacekeepers, through the U.N. Security Council are unacceptable to Russia and not viable, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said Dec. 17, Interfax reported. The U.N. Secretariat is exploring strictly preliminary options for a U.N. peacekeeping presence in Syria, he said. Russia wants to maintain a stake in post-al Assad Syria.
