U.N. special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura will hold talks over Syria with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov in Geneva on April 24, Reuters reported April 20. The meeting will focus on upcoming talks in Kazakhstan's capital of Astana and prospects for another round of dialogue between the different actors in Syria's war in Geneva in May. Neither dialogue track has succeeded in significantly reducing violence in the war, which is now in its seventh year. No U.S. representatives are scheduled to attend the April 24 meeting, which comes amid heightened U.S.-Russia tensions over U.S. missile strikes against a Syrian air base on April 6. Asked why the United States would not be attending the upcoming meeting, de Mistura said "the date and circumstances were not conducive" for U.S. participation.
