Syria: Rebels Form Unified Military Command

Syrian rebel commanders Dec. 7 elected a 30-member leadership council with defected Syrian army general Brig. Gen. Salim Idriss as its chief of staff, a senior rebel official said Dec. 8, AP reported. More than 550 rebel commanders and representatives met in Antalya, Turkey, on Dec. 5 to unify the opposition and select the council to work with the rebel political leadership chosen in Qatar in November. Al Qaeda-inspired group Jabhat al-Nusra and hard-line Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham were excluded from the meeting and the council, the rebel official said. As rebel gains continue and the pressure on the regime grows, the likelihood of a military coup will increase.
