Syria: Pentagon Developing Proposals For U.S. Ground Forces In Conflict

The U.S. Defense Department is working to develop proposals to accelerate the fight against the Islamic State, including a plan to send conventional ground forces into Syria, CNN reported Feb. 15. The proposals come as part of a review ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump into the fight against the terrorist group. If it were approved, the plan would be a major turnaround from the position held by the administration of former President Barack Obama, which chose instead to support certain groups in the conflict. Deploying conventional U.S. forces to Syria would lessen Washington's dependence on these groups, particularly the Kurdish People's Protection Units (PKK). That said, it would also mean deepening its involvement in an extremely complex conflict that has already destabilized Syria and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.
