Syria: Al Assad Not Primed To Fall, Jordanian King Says

The regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad has the capability of holding power for at least the first half of 2013, Jordanian King Abdullah II said Jan. 25 during a panel appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, CNN reported. Any fragmentation of Syria into small states would be catastrophic and something that would be problematic for decades to come, the king said. Al Qaeda has been establishing a presence there with support from certain unnamed quarters, he said, and it will take at least two or three years to secure Jordan's borders and eliminate the jihadists. The militant threat will similar to the one currently in Afghanistan, he said.
