Sudan: Military Aircraft Crashes

The rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North's Sudan Revolutionary Front says it shot down a Sudanese military MiG-23 warplane Dec. 20, according to a statement released by the group, Reuters reported. The military acknowledged that one of its planes had crashed while landing in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, and that its pilot was killed, but it blamed the incident on a technical failure. The rebel statement said the plane was hit while on a bombing mission in South Kordofan, and the group threatened to down all military aircraft flying over rebel-controlled areas. Deeply contentious issues between Sudan and South Sudan have provoked intermittent conflict since South Sudan seceded in 2011.
