Spain: Unemployment Rate Hits New High

Spain's unemployment rate rose to 26 percent in the final quarter of 2012, up from 25.02 percent in the previous quarter, AFP reported, citing a National Statistics Institute report. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government had forecast a rate of 24.6 percent. As Europe's safety nets strain under the weight of austerity measures, more social and political unrest could arise.
