South Sudan: U.N. Security Council Fails To Adopt Arms Embargo Resolution

The U.N. Security Council failed Dec. 23 to adopt a draft resolution to impose an arms embargo and added sanctions against South Sudan, Reuters reported. The U.S.-drafted resolution received only seven of the nine votes in favor required to pass; there were eight abstentions. The development comes days after U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned about the possibility of genocide in South Sudan, should the world continue to fail to take action. Fighting broke out between rival factions in the country over the summer, threatening to revive the country's recent civil war.
