Somalia: Islamists Reportedly Take Southwestern Village

Fighters from Somali hard-line Islamist militia al Shabaab on Jan. 2 captured Awdinle, a village in southwestern Somalia near Baydhabo where hundreds of militiamen trained by the Ethiopian military arrived recently under escort of Ethiopian troops, witnesses said, the pro-al Shabaab website Somali Memo reported Jan. 3. The militant group launched a mutli-pronged, hour-long attack on the village, witnesses said. Al Shabaab has successfully reverted to guerrilla warfare against the forces of the Somali government and their allies following its ejection from the southern city of Kismayo and from the capital, Mogadishu.
