Pakistan: Prime Minister Orders Reopening Of Border With Afghanistan

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered March 20 that the two main border crossings with Afghanistan be reopened, Reuters reported March 20. Pakistan pointedly closed the Torkham and Chaman crossings in February, following a string of attacks that Islamabad said were carried out by militants operating from Afghanistan. Militants have long taken advantage of the porous 2,430-kilometer border (1,510 miles) dividing the two countries. With the spring fighting offensive approaching quickly — which will likely bring more high-level attacks in both countries — it will be key to watch if Pakistan will once again resort to border closures to prevent militant attacks.
