North Korea: U.N. Security Council Condemns Rocket Launch, Tightens Sanctions

The 15-nation U.N. Security Council on Jan. 22 voted unanimously to condemn North Korea's December rocket launch and tighten existing U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang, Reuters reported. The resolution approved by the council resulted from a deal reached between the United States and China, unnamed envoys said. Even though the resolution only tightens existing sanctions on the country, rather than adding new ones, China's support was a diplomatic blow for Pyongyang, unnamed diplomats said. The launch allowed Pyongyang to slightly reduce its political and defense dependence on China.
