Nigeria: Forces Surround Kidnappers, French Hostages

Nigerian forces have surrounded the kidnappers who took a French family hostage and are attempting to free the family, Reuters reported Feb. 21. A military source told Reuters that the kidnappers and hostages are between Dikwa and Ngala in the northeastern Nigerian state of Borno, near the border with Cameroon, where the family was kidnapped Feb. 19. Northeastern Nigeria is militant group Boko Haram's core territory. France suspected Boko Haram in the Feb. 19 incident. Ansaru, a Boko Haram splinter group, claimed responsibility for an earlier kidnapping in Bauchi State, but no one has yet claimed the Feb. 19 incident.
