Myanmar: Military Ends Operation Targeting Rohingya Militants

The Myanmar military has concluded its so-called clearance operation targeting suspected Rohingya militants in restive Rakhine state, National Security Advisor U Thaung Tun said Feb. 15, the Irrawaddy and the Myanmar Times reported. The four-month operation was triggered by attacks on security posts along the Bangladesh border last October. But the sweep has come under intense international scrutiny over allegedly widespread human rights abuses. Some 69,000 Rohingyas have since fled Myanmar, according to the United Nations. The government has denied most of the claims. The curfew in the region has been relaxed, and only a police presence remains to maintain the peace, according to the national security advisor.
