Libya: Hijacked Flight Lands In Malta, Some Passengers Released

An Afriqiyah Airways plane traveling from Sabha to Tripoli was hijacked Dec. 23 and has since landed in Malta, the Times of Malta and Reuters reported. At least 118 passengers and crew were reportedly onboard the plane when it landed. The two hijackers, who told crewmembers they had a hand grenade, have since begun allowing women and children to leave the plane, Malta Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said via Twitter. While details about the hijackers are still emerging, both have been described as supporters of Libya's former leader, Moammar Gadhafi.
