Kyrgyzstan: Security Forces Halt Mass Self-Immolation

Police and firefighters on Nov. 20 prevented a mass self-immolation in Bishkek by people who have lost their property because of debts to businesses, Interfax reported. Forty of the 65 people gathered were set to take part in the act, and a majority of them were older women. Security personnel took away jars and plastic bottles filled with flammable materials and put out a fire that had been lit. Social divisions and the weak political foundations of the Kyrgyz state threaten to lead to larger protests and violence in Kyrgyzstan.
