Kuwait: Court Overturns Politician's 5-Year Jail Term

A Kuwaiti appeals court overturned the five-year jail sentence given to prominent opposition and tribal leader Musallam al Barrack, who was convicted of insulting Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah at a political rally in October 2012, a defense lawyer said, Reuters reported. Al Barrack could still receive another sentence under the country's legal system, and his case will continue at the appeals court in June. Al-Sabah's controversial change to Kuwait's election law before last year's parliamentary elections prompted the political rally at which al Barrack was arrested and sparked widespread unrest.
