Japan: Government Delays Decision On Defense Amendment

The Japanese government will postpone until 2014 a decision on whether to try to alter interpretations of its constitution to allow the country to exercise collective self-defense, an unnamed official said Sept. 21, Kyodo reported. The delay is a result of reluctance from the New Komeito party, the junior coalition partner of the Liberal Democratic Party. Even without constitutional revision, Tokyo has found ways to advance the security and defense initiatives it deems vital.
