Ivory Coast: Defense Minister Trapped As Mutiny Continues

Troops in the city of Bouake trapped Alain-Richard Donwahi, defense minister and deputy commander of the Republican Guard, inside a local leader's home Jan. 7 after opening fire on the residence, Reuters reported. The mayor of Bouake and journalists were inside the home as well. A mutiny by former rebel fighters began two days ago and, earlier Jan. 7, President Alassane Ouattara had announced a deal to end the crisis in exchange for bonus payments and improved living conditions.
