Iraq: Chinese Company Likely To Win Pipeline Contract, Official Says

China Petroleum Pipeline is close to winning a $650 million contract to build a 300-kilometer (186-mile) pipeline linking oilfields in southern Iraq's Maysan province to major export storage depots and offshore terminals on the Persian Gulf, the chief of state-run Maysan Oil Co., Ali Maarij, said Jan. 22, Reuters and Al Arabiya English reported. The pipeline is scheduled to be operational by the beginning of 2014. China's presence in the Iraqi energy sector is growing in part because of conflict between Baghdad and ExxonMobil over the company's contracts with the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this sitrep inaccurately described the pipeline project discussed above.
