Iraq: Army Leaves Al Fallujah After Security Incidents

Iraqi army forces withdrew from Al Fallujah in the Sunni province of Anbar, located in western Iraq, after clashes with protesters left five demonstrators dead, Al Arabiya reported Jan. 25. The violence was the most serious incident since Sunnis began protesting Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government in late December 2012. Anbar provincial officials said they had reached an agreement with the commander of the armed forces to replace Iraqi army troops in Al Fallujah with federal police in. Also in Al Fallujah, gunmen killed two soldiers at an army checkpoint, AP reported. The incident led local authorities to implement a curfew in the city.
