Iran: Price Of Rice Doubles, According To Reports

The price of rice in Iran has doubled because the country has had difficulties importing rice from countries like India and Pakistan because of international sanctions, Mehr News and other agencies reported Jan. 21. Mehr published pictures showing large crowds of people outside shops selling imported rice at a lower official rate in northern Ardabil province. The agency later removed the pictures. The Iranian government has chosen defiance rather than cooperation in response to Western sanctions.
