Iran: Lawmakers Call For Central Bank To Intervene In Currency Market

A group of Iranian lawmakers urged the central bank to intervene in the currency market to support the rial, which hit a record low Sept. 9, Reuters reported Sept. 11. Iran's economy and finance minister, however, said the market turmoil should be resolved within three days. The rial's slump comes amid growing pressure from the West as U.S.- and EU-led sanctions aim to push Tehran to return to negotiations on uranium enrichment and, more generally, to contain Iran's growing regional ambitions.
