Indonesia: 8.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits

A magnitude 8.6 earthquake occurred more than 320 kilometers (200 miles) off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on April 11, The New York Times reported. Several strong aftershocks were reported, with the largest measuring 8.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake was also felt in Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia and India. Indonesia issued a tsunami warning, and eastern India and coastal areas of southern Thailand declared tsunami alerts.
