France: Delegates Approve Paris Climate Change Deal

After two weeks of negotiations, representatives of nearly 200 countries have approved the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the extent of climate change in the coming decades, The Telegraph reported Dec. 12. The final agreement included maintaining global temperature increases well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and to peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible. The parties will review progress on these goals every five years. Industrialized nations also pledged to provide $100 billion in climate finance per year by 2020 to developing nations. The final agreement was presented to delegates earlier in the morning, but there were delays in the vote because of last minute errors discovered in the text and slight wording changes. The Paris Agreement will hasten the transition beyond oil already underway for technological reasons, but will be as difficult to enforce as the previous Kyoto Protocol.
