France: Constitutional Council Validates Eleven Presidential Candidates

France's constitutional council validated 11 presidential candidates March 18 to compete in the April 23 presidential election, according to council president Laurent Fabius, Reuters reported. The top three contenders for the post are Francois Fillon of the Republican Party, independent Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen of the National Front. The first round of voting will be followed by a May 7 runoff between the two top candidates. Legislative elections will follow on June 11 and June 18. Inroads made in both elections by political forces that resist globalization and want to stop the process of European integration will have far-reaching effects on France and the eurozone.
