Egypt: Morsi Orders Military To Maintain Security

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has ordered the military to protect state institutions and maintain security in the lead up to a referendum on the constitution, BBC reported Dec. 10, the day the presidential decree went into effect. The military has been asked to coordinate with the police to maintain security, which includes arresting civilians. The army has sealed off the presidential palace — the focus of opposition demonstrations — with a wall of concrete blocks. Immediately following the declaration of a cease-fire in Gaza, Egypt was plunged into a massive domestic crisis.
