China: Vice Premier Denies 'Chongqing Model' Existed

Vice Premier and Chongqing Party chief Zhang Dejiang on Nov. 8 denied that the "Chongqing model" ever existed, South China Morning Post reported. Answering questions from reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing 18th Party Congress, Zhang declined to give a timetable for possible judicial proceedings against former Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai, the architect of the aggressive social-economic initiatives known as the "Chongqing model," China Daily reported. "The policy of reform and opening-up for Chongqing will not change," Zhang said. With its ideological flair and popular support, the Chongqing model soon became the centerpiece of ideological debates across the country.
