China: 4 Tibetans Self-Immolate

Three teenage monks and a Tibetan woman set fire to themselves Nov. 7 in the largest number of confirmed self-immolations protesting Chinese rule over Tibet in a single day, a London-based rights group said, AP reported. Free Tibet director Stephanie Brigden said the group expects Tibetan protests to continue to escalate as the Communist Party Congress — a weeklong conference that will unveil China's new leaders — begins Nov. 8. China has seen an outbreak of self-immolations for more than a year among ethnic Tibetans, who do not commonly use the form of protest.
