Central African Republic: Rebels Halt Advance On Capital

The Seleka rebel coalition in Central African Republic said Dec. 20 that it has halted its advance on the capital, Bangui, and is open to peace talks, according to a statement released by the alliance, Reuters reported. Justin Mambissi Matar, the secretary general of the coalition, said the advance was stopped after Chadian authorities pledged not to attack rebel positions. Chad announced Dec. 19 that it had deployed 2,000 troops to protect the Central African capital from the rebels. On Dec. 18, the rebels took Bria, a key town in the country's diamond-mining region.
