Cambodia: Thousands Of Garment Factory Workers Clash With Police

Thousands of workers at a Nike sportswear factory in Cambodia's Kampong Speu province clashed with police while protesting their wages May 27, leaving at least 23 injured, a trade union representative said, Reuters reported. Police in riot gear bearing stun batons responded when the protesters, mostly female, blocked a road outside the factory. Cambodia's labor-intensive economy has grown partly on the back of important Western investments in its textile industry, and the country has used its strategic location and cheap labor to gradually build up its competitiveness in global markets.
