Afghanistan: Taliban Fighters Attack Major Military Base

Taliban fighters wearing military uniforms attacked a military base April 21 near Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Afghanistan's Balkh province, Al Jazeera reported. The attack occurred during Friday prayers and began near the base's mosque. After detonating a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, militants killed eight soldiers and wounded 11 others at the base, which houses the Afghan National Army's 209th Corps and presides over much of northern Afghanistan. The attack is outside of the Taliban's normal zone of operations. The Taliban usually launch their annual spring offensive in mid-April.
