On Sept. 26, Uganda deployed a planeload of its soldiers to Baidoa, the seat of Somalia's interim government. Uganda seems to have lost patience with the proposed African Union (AU) peacekeeping force for Somalia and is moving in to keep Somalia's Islamic Courts Union (ICU) from becoming a supporting force for Islamist insurgencies throughout East Africa.
The ICU seized the port city of Kismayo on Sept. 24, thus preventing the interim government or any foreign forces from using the port to receive supplies. Given that supplying troops by air can be inefficient, the Ugandan troops deployed to Baidoa must receive supplies via a secure overland route from Kampala to Baidoa. The southwestern Somalian city of Baardheere -- about 200 miles north of Kismayo -- lies square along this line, and thus is a likely battleground between Ugandan forces and the ICU.
