Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal has decided not to return to Hamas' political headquarters in Damascus, unnamed regional diplomatic and intelligence sources said Jan. 27, Reuters reported. Meshaal will not publicly shut down the headquarters, the sources said, but the move leaves only an insignificant Hamas presence in Syria. Although Meshaal is currently in Cairo, Hamas has not reached an agreement to open an office in Egypt and Qatar remains the leader's expected residence, a diplomat said.
