January 27, 2012 | 1203 GMT

The recent Aguelhoc attack was carried out by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) militants who were supporting rebels from the separatist Tuareg National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), according to a Jan. 26 Malian Defense Ministry statement, AFP reported Jan. 27. Heavy fighting was reported Jan. 26 in the northeast town of Anderamboukane. MNLA spokesman Moussa Ag Assarid said that the MNLA is in control of the town, adding that the fighting has ceased. An unnamed military official from the regional Malian headquarters in Gao denied these claims.
