Russia: Naval Development Key For Arctic Protection - Putin

The Russian navy will protect national economic interests such as Arctic regions with rich biological and mineral resources, Russian President Vladimir Putin said July 30 during a ceremony marking the beginning of construction on a new Borei-class submarine, Reuters reported. The Kremlin is seeking greater strategic nuclear capabilities for the navy, which will feature eight Borei-class submarines and a total of 51 new ships by 2020, Putin said.
