In response to ongoing turmoil in Venezuela, the ambassadors of Greece and Jamaica are supporting efforts by Cesar Gaviria -- the secretary-general of the Organization of American States -- to invoke sanctions under the OAS' year-old Inter-American Democratic Charter against the government of President Hugo Chavez, El Nacional reported Dec. 5. With a 4-day-old national strike threatening to shut down Venezuela's oil industry, the United States also might press harder for a rapid OAS sanction.
