Venezuela: Security Takes a Backseat

Italy's new ambassador to Venezuela put President Hugo Chavez on the spot this week by expressing concern about the country's poor security situation. Venezuela's violent trends have little chance of reversing, however, unless the government makes a better effort to intervene -- though as it stands now Venezuelan security forces appear to be more focused on suppressing the opposition than on fighting crime.
