Events in Liberia have moved quickly in recent days. An offensive by two rebel groups, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) and the Movement for Democracy and Elections in Liberia (MODEL), has reached Monrovia. Fighting has displaced thousands of people on the eastern edge of the city, the United States and France have evacuated their citizens and diplomatic personnel, and international mediators are being rushed into the country.
In Monrovia itself, the situation is coming to a head. With government forces now surrounded and cut off from outside support, the death of the Taylor administration appears certain. The real question now is not what will happen to Taylor, but what will happen to Liberia once he is out of office. In the coming power vacuum, the now allied LURD and MODEL groups are likely to clash with each other, and Liberia will be thrust into yet another war.
