It was business as usual on the streets of major Muslim cites around the world Aug. 31, a day after Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry lodged a complaint with the Swedish Embassy in Islamabad over a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed. When a similar cartoon appeared in European newspapers in 2006, the issue lay dormant for some time before it exploded suddenly and violently across the Muslim world. Given the precedent, then, this latest controversy could have serious security implications for Western multinational corporations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the Muslim world.
