A no-confidence vote will be held July 9 against Kuwaiti Oil Minister Sheikh Ali Jarrah al-Sabah, against the backdrop of a growing political feud within the royal family.
The political standoff in Kuwait reached a climax June 10 when several parliamentarians filed a request to interrogate the oil minister and called for a no-confidence vote. The controversy stems from a comment Ali Jarrah made May 12, in which he referred to former Oil Minister Sheikh Ali al-Khalifa al-Sabah as his "master" and said he often seeks the ex-minister's advice on oil issues. Al-Khalifa, a cousin of the current minister, was dismissed by parliament after being accused of embezzling more than $100 million from state-owned Kuwait Oil Tanker Co.
