A bomb planted on top of an elevator car killed former police chief and wealthy businessman Vajdin Lame in Tirana, Albania, on Feb. 28. The rare tactic employed in the hit illustrates a potential security vulnerability in the protection of high-profile individuals.
As Lame reportedly was involved in Albania's turbulent organized crime scene, speculations have arisen that either his former business associates or mafia members from the country's south ordered his assassination.
Regardless of who killed him, the operation was well-planned and well-executed. To successfully carry out the operation, the killers had to defeat tight security and take advantage of a brief window of opportunity. They struck during the short time when Lame was unprotected, indicating they had studied his security detail's methods and routines and knew exactly when to hit him. This, of course, raises the possibility that killers had penetrated his security team.
