Nepal's royal government rounded up prominent members of several major political parties, cut phone lines and deployed security personnel to place the president of the Nepali Congress Party, Girija Prasad Koirala, and the general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Madhav Kumar Nepal, under house arrest Jan. 19.

New Delhi quickly condemned the moves, calling them "regrettable" and of "grave concern." A showdown between the king and the opposition could draw New Delhi to move beyond words of condemnation into actively seeking democracy's restoration in Nepal.
