German authorities arrested an Iraqi man at his home in Lower Saxony on Oct. 10 on suspicion of distributing al Qaeda's video and audio messages on the Internet. The case highlights rarely noticed international efforts to track down al Qaeda's "cyber-jihadists."
The 36-year-old suspect, identified only as Ibrahim R., was arrested in the town of Osnabruck following an investigation into his other criminal activities that began in early 2005, according to authorities in Lower Saxony. During the course of the investigation, authorities reportedly detained and released Ibrahim R. at least two other times. His phone, and presumably his Internet usage, also was monitored. On Sept. 24, a warrant was issued for his arrest on suspicion of supporting a terrorist organization.
