The Angolan government announced Aug. 16 that it has positioned troops in the country's Zaire province bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Four army battalions equipped with armored vehicles and helicopters have been deployed to the province, near the DRC capital of Kinshasa. This troop deployment is ostensibly to guard against violence spilling over the border Aug. 20, when the full results of the DRC's historic July 30 national elections are due. However, Angola is strategically positioned and has enough resources to intervene in the DRC on behalf of DRC President Joseph Kabila should his re-election bid be challenged by a discontented opposition.
